 Applying to an Online University

Online University Application

When applying in an online university it is of utmost importance that you understand ALL of the universities policies and requirements. If you have decided on a university before drafting your admission letter or filling out their online admissions form make sure you have checked and double checked their admission requirements to see if you are indeed eligible for enrollment in that university. Remember each university has their own set of requirements for admissions and usually has special requirements for international students.

Some online universities accept any applicant as long as that applicant has the ability to pay. Though it is true that it will be easiest to get admitted in online universities like this it is best to think twice about enrolling in such a university. Such standards or rather the absence of it is indicative of the quality of students they accept. Remember that even though you will be studying online you will still be required to collaborate or at least mingle with other students online. Your education will probably be affected by certain collaborative projects with other students so that you will want to have “quality classmates” around you.

Most online universities however have admission requirements akin to traditional universities. Some of the admission requirements usually include a passing score in some standardized test or another, a certain minimum grade point average, a minimum number of years of professional experience (for graduate students), and of course the submission of an application letter and a filled-up admissions form. For international students a proof of ones level of skill in the English language is usually required. This means passing scores in standardized tests such as TESOL, TOEFL, or IELTS.

You should also find out the currency in which fees are paid and the method of payments accepted since your country’s currency might not be accepted. Payment and refund policies are one of the things you should pay special attention to when applying to an online university because you want to make sure that in case you do not continue your education for some reason you will get a reasonable amount of your payment back.

 The Independent Style of Study

If you have enrolled or are enrolling in an online university you should be aware that you will be learning your lessons on your own. People who are lucky enough to have had an independent study style from the start will have no problems studying on their own. People who are used to having someone to guide them or at least to discuss things with will definitely have a harder time adjusting to a more independent style of study.

If you want to be successful as an online university student you will need to prepare yourself for independent study. Adjusting can take sometime so it is best if you prepare before the course actually starts. For those smack in the middle of your course it is not too late. It might be a bit harder for you but you have no choice but to adjust and learn how to study by yourself.

To help you adjust to a more independent style of learning here are a few important things to remember.

· Make sure you familiarize yourself with the basic format of the course materials. Each University has its own format for the course materials whether they are in the digital form or in print. The important thing is you know the format of the material you will be using (or are currently using) so that you’ll know where to focus and what each part is designed for.
· Although this might sound weird try to develop an interactive learning approach with you course materials. When dealing with a professor the best approach is of course interactive where you get to ask and answer questions. Sine your professor in this case are your course materials develop interactivity with it by paying attention to each topic, understanding the objectives, and framing questions in your own mind. Then if you do have questions try to get some answers by going back to the explanations. Of course you answer its questions by answering the exercises, required or not.
· For topics still unclear make sure you go beyond your course materials for answers. Since this is online learning, use the internet as your resource to understand the topic at hand even better.
· And last, make sure you have an independent learning attitude. Be active in seeking answers on your own and do not depend on your classmates or tutor to help you comprehend things.

 An Organized Distance Learner

Distance Learner

Inside a traditional classroom learning is usually organized for you with the timetable and topic set out by the teacher. When studying in an online university almost all the organization is left to you. True topics are laid out and a time table is usually suggested but without someone to look over your shoulders you still very much have the power to do whatever you want with your own time. If you want to succeed as an online learner you need to get organized.

The first step in getting organized is to plan your study time. Be realistic when planning your study time. Planning your study time usually means having to plan the rest of your week as well since a set study time will most probably affect either your time for work, family, or leisure.

Next you need to learn to prioritize. This is especially true if you are extra busy. You might have to drop some things or lessen time for them to be able to make enough time for studying.

Another key thing is to designate a certain space for your study area. A prepared space with all the things you need for studying like pens, a calculator, your course materials, and a computer will help set the mood for you. Make it clear the you shouldn’t be disturbed when in your study area unless necessary.

Follow the timetable you’ve set. Of course there will be times when you lag behind due to a difficult topic or you get advanced due to an easy one but at the end of the week try to have had accomplished all the week’s goals. If you weren’t able to do this then try to set some extra time next week to make sure you catch up. You might also want to permanently add some study time if you realize that the time you’ve set is just isn’t enough.

Study everyday. Missing study time can become a bad habit so make sure you try to form the habit of daily study. It is harder to understand concepts if you try to learn them all at one time so daily study will make digesting topics easier.
